Minnesota State University, Mankato’s 2017-2018 Good Thunder Reading Series will host eight writers during six events in the series’ 36th year.
The annual Good Thunder Reading Series invites important contemporary writers to Mankato to come together with the community readers and writers, be interviewed on public radio, conduct discussions on the craft of writing and read from their published works.

Featured writers in the Fall 2017 Good Thunder Reading Series include:
Wednesday-Thursday, Sept. 13-14: Poet and novelist Juan Felipe Herrera, the 21st Poet Laureate of the United States (2015-2016), is this year’s annual Nadine B. Andreas Visiting Writer Resident. Master of Fine Arts candidate Alyssa Striplin, the 2017-18 Andreas graduate assistant, will read from her work.
Thursday, Oct. 12: Poet and author Marcus Wicker.
Thursday, Nov. 9: Poet and author Meg Day.
The Spring 2018 series will feature:
Thursday, Feb. 22: Novelist Stephen Graham Jones.
Tuesday-Friday, March 13-16: Novelist Lesley Nneka Arimah is this year’s annual Eddice B. Barber Visiting Writer Resident. Fiction and creative nonfiction writer and Robert C. Wright award winner Jessica Guess, a Master of Fine Arts candidate in Minnesota State Mankato’s Creative Writing Program and the Robert C. Wright award winner, will read from her work.
Thursday, April 5: Author Nicole Walter.
The Good Thunder Reading Series began in 1982 and has committed itself to its mission of promoting literature, inspiring creativity, and fostering lively conversations about why writing matters.
The Good Thunder Reading Series is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board and the Prairie Lakes Regional Arts Council, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.
The 2017-18 Good Thunder Reading Series also receives support from Minnesota State Mankato’s Department of English, College of Arts and Humanities, Office of Institutional Diversity, the Nadine B. Andreas Endowment, the Eddice B. Barber Visiting Writer Endowment, the Robert C. Wright Endowment and individual donors. The Twin Rivers Council of the Arts, First Congregational UCC, and Barnes & Noble Bookstore at Minnesota State Mankato offer additional assistance.
