NMSU parade in family student housing includes visit from Santa
The weather outside is delightful with not a sign of snow on the ground, but New Mexico State University’s Fire Department is working with the resident director of NMSU’s Student Family Housing to bring some holiday cheer to those staying on campus during the winter break.
From 5-7 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 17, NMSU’s Fire Department will have its traditional parade to pull Santa and his sleigh through family housing. The parade will begin at the NMSU Fire Department on Wells Street and go through NMSU’s three family housing communities and end up at Aggie Express.
“The Fire Department has done this parade for 11 years,” said Tabitha Thomas, resident director of NMSU’s South Operations Family Housing. “This year we will be joining the Fire Department and approximately 400 residents including children, who remain at NMSU during the winter break, by celebrating this holiday season.” NMSU’s South Operations Family Housing includes Tom Fort and Sutherland Villages, Cole Village and Cervantes Village.
The parade will include six vehicles including two fire trucks and one utility vehicle towing the sleigh with Santa and his reindeer. Santa’s elves along with NMSU firefighter’s family members and Housing and Residential Life staff will collect letters to Santa and pass out candy canes as part of the event.
“Both parents and kids enjoy the parade and taking photos with Santa,” said Johnny Carrillo, NMSU fire chief. “It’s just one small way the Fire Department and the staff at student family housing are working together to make the season brighter here on campus.”
After the parade, the students and their families will be invited to gather at Aggie Express for candy canes, hot chocolate and to have their picture taken with Santa when he arrives.
